Calhoun County is located in the southwestern part of the state of Illinois and was established on February 10, 1825. Named after John C. Calhoun, the seventh Vice President of the United States, the county covers an area of approximately 284 square miles. Calhoun County is bordered to the east by the Illinois River and to the west by the Mississippi River, making it a peninsula surrounded by water.

Due to its unique geography, the region was first inhabited by various Native American tribes, including the Illiniwek and Mississippian cultures. The first European settlers arrived in the early 18th century and were primarily French explorers and fur traders. In the early 19th century, the area attracted settlers of English, Irish, and German origin.

During the 1840s and 1850s, Calhoun County saw a significant population increase, partly due to immigrants coming from Germany. Agriculture became an essential part of the local economy, with the fertile soils of the region being suitable for growing various crops such as wheat, corn, and oats. The county also became known for its fruit production, including peaches, apples, and melons.

Fun fact: Calhoun County is referred to as the "Heart of the Golden Eagle Viewing Area" due to its cliff sides and proximity to the Mississippi River. It is one of the prime locations in the country for spotting these magnificent birds, especially during the winter months when the birds migrate southwards. The Pere Marquette State Park is a popular destination for both tourists and bird enthusiasts who come to see the golden eagles and other raptors up close.
