Champaign County is located in the heart of East Central Illinois and is the state's tenth-most populous county. Established on February 20, 1833, the county was named after Champaign County, Ohio, where many of the county's early settlers came from. The county seat is Urbana, and it is also home to the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, a well-known public research university founded in 1867.

The area was primarily inhabited by Native American tribes including the Illiniwek and Potawatomi, until European settlers, mainly from Kentucky and Ohio, began arriving in the early 1800s. Agriculture quickly became the predominant industry in the region, with corn and soybeans as the primary crops.

In 1854, the Illinois Central Railroad was constructed, linking Champaign County to a growing network of railroads and contributing to its economic development. The railroad's arrival established Champaign as an important transportation hub, which it has continued to be to this day.

Throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Champaign County experienced significant growth and development, largely due to the presence of the University of Illinois. The university has played a critical role in shaping the county's economy and culture, attracting world-class talent, and fostering innovation in areas like agriculture, engineering, and computer science.

Fun fact: Pulitzer Prize-winning film critic, Roger Ebert, was born and raised in Urbana, Champaign County. He is one of the most famous alumni of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and his legacy lives on through "Ebertfest," an annual film festival held in the city of Champaign.
