Clark County is located in the southeastern part of the state of Illinois, and is named after George Rogers Clark, an American military officer who played a significant role in the American Revolutionary War. The county was established on March 22, 1819, when it was divided from neighboring Crawford County. The county seat and largest city in Clark County is Marshall.

In its earliest years, the area was primarily inhabited by Native American tribes such as the Kickapoo, Shawnee, and Potawatomi.
