Coles County is located in the central-eastern part of Illinois and was established on December 25, 1830. It was named after Edward Coles, the second governor of Illinois who served from 1822 to 1826. The county seat is Charleston, which is also the home of Eastern Illinois University.

The region was initially inhabited by Native American tribes, including the Kickapoo, Miami, and Potawatomi. European-American settlement of Coles County began in the early 1800s with settlers migrating from the eastern parts of the United States. Agriculture was the primary industry and helped to shape the county's growth.

During the Civil War, Coles County became divided over the issue of slavery, as Abraham Lincoln debated political rival, Stephen A. Douglas, in Charleston's town square in 1858, a momentous event that occurred during their U.S. Senate race. These discussions, known as the Lincoln-Douglas Debates, brought attention to Coles County and highlighted the strong political energy of the time.

A fun fact about Coles County is that it is home to the "Coles County Dragway USA," a quarter-mile drag strip located in Charleston. This drag strip has been hosting regular racing events since 1957, attracting both local sports enthusiasts and visitors from neighboring states.

Fun fact number two: Coles County is also home to the "world's tallest Lincoln statue". The statue, which stands at 72 feet tall, is located in the city of Ashmore and was built in 1968. The statue is made of steel and fiberglass and is a popular tourist attraction in the region.
