DeKalb County is located in the northern region of the state of Illinois and is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The county was established on March 4, 1837, and was named after Johann de Kalb, a German-born military officer who served as a major general in the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War. DeKalb County covers an area of approximately 635 square miles and has a population of around 105,000 people.

The region was originally inhabited by Native American tribes, such as the Potawatomi, before European settlement. The first known European settler in DeKalb County was Joseph Glidden, who arrived in 1834. Glidden played a significant role in the development of the area and is credited with the invention of barbed wire in 1873. The invention of barbed wire greatly impacted agricultural practices not only in the region but around the world, leading to DeKalb being known as the "Barbed Wire Capital."

Throughout its history, DeKalb County has primarily been an agricultural community, with a focus on corn, soybeans, and livestock. The county is also home to Northern Illinois University (NIU), which was established in 1895 and has since become a major source of education and employment in the region.

One fun fact about DeKalb County is that it has a unique tradition called "Corn Fest," an annual three-day festival held in downtown DeKalb. The fest began in 1977 and celebrates the county's agricultural heritage, featuring food vendors, midway rides, a car show, musical acts, and other family-friendly activities. Corn Fest highlights DeKalb County's deep-rooted connection to agriculture and is a popular event that draws visitors from all around the region.
