Fayette County, located in the great state of Illinois, was established on February 14, 1821. It was formed from the parts of Bond, Clark, and Crawford Counties. The county is named in honor of Gilbert du Motier, marquis de La Fayette, a French nobleman who gained fame as a general during the American Revolutionary War and played a crucial role in securing support from France for the cause of the United States.

Vandalia, which is the county seat of Fayette County, holds special significance in Illinois' history. It served as the state capital from 1819 to 1839 before being replaced by the current capital, Springfield. During its tenure as the state capital, Vandalia hosted several notable events, including the visit of Marquis de Lafayette in 1825, where the town's main street was named after him.

One fun fact about Fayette County is its connection to Abraham Lincoln. Lincoln, before becoming the 16th President of the United States, served in the Illinois General Assembly while the state capital was still located in Vandalia. The Vandalia Statehouse State Historic Site, which is the oldest surviving state capitol building in Illinois, has been preserved as a museum, showcasing the courthouse where Lincoln and his fellow lawmakers worked, debated, and shaped the early history of the state. Visitors to Fayette County can explore the historic site and learn about the early political career of one of America's most revered leaders.
