Ford County is located in the central part of the great state of Illinois and was created on February 17, 1859. It was named in honor of Thomas Ford, who served as Governor of Illinois from 1842 to 1846. Covering an area of approximately 486 square miles, Ford County is considered the 50th of Illinois' 102 counties based on its population. As of the 2020 census, it has a population of approximately 12,199 residents. The county seat and largest city is Paxton, which was founded in 1856 and incorporated in 1865.

The county's fertile prairie lands facilitated its establishment as a hub for agriculture, with many early settlers being of German, Swedish, and English origins. Throughout the years, Ford County's agriculture industry continued to flourish and remains one of the county's key economic drivers. Known for corn and soybean production, along with the livestock sector, the economy is largely driven by these agricultural activities.

A fun fact about Ford County is that it is home to Harvest Moon Drive-In, one of the few remaining drive-in theaters in the state of Illinois. The theater, located in Gibson City, was opened in 1954 and today still provides an entertaining and nostalgic movie-going experience for visitors and residents alike.
