Fulton County, located in the great state of Illinois, has a rich and diverse history dating back to its establishment on January 28, 1823. Named after Robert Fulton, an American engineer, and inventor known for developing the first commercially successful steamboat, Fulton County has since become an important regional hub in Illinois.

The county's first permanent settlement was established by a Frenchman named Ossian M. Ross. In 1819, he laid the foundation of Lewistown, which later became the county seat in 1823. The area was mainly inhabited by European settlers attracted by fertile land that was suitable for agricultural activities.

During the 19th and 20th centuries, Fulton County played a role in the development of industrial and transportation infrastructure within the region. The Illinois and Michigan Canal (finished in 1848) and the several railroads constructed in the 1850s and the 1860s contributed to growth and prosperity in the county.

Fulton County's Spoon River Valley is also renowned for its cultural significance. Edgar Lee Masters, a native of the county, wrote the famous "Spoon River Anthology" in 1915, a poetic work consisting of over 200 fictional epitaphs of various citizens of the county. The Spoon River Valley Scenic Drive, held annually during the first two weekends of October, attracts numerous tourists and helps to promote local artists and businesses.

Fun Fact: Fulton County is home to the stunning Emiquon National Wildlife Refuge, which encompasses one of the largest floodplain restoration projects in North America, providing important habitat for migratory birds and wildlife conservation.
