Greene County is located in the Western part of Illinois and officially came into existence on January 20, 1821. It was named after General Nathanael Greene, a major general of the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War. The county was formed out of Madison County, which was itself part of the Illinois Territory at the time.

The first settler to the area was Enoch Smith, who arrived in 1817. Carrollton, the county seat, was founded in 1821 by Thomas Carlin, who later served as the Governor of Illinois from 1838 to 1842. Greene County experienced significant growth in population and infrastructure during the 19th century, with the arrival of multiple railroads.

Agriculture has been a predominant industry in the region, thanks to its fertile soil and access to transportation for agricultural goods. The county has been known for its production of corn, soybeans, and livestock. Over the years, several towns and villages throughout Greene County have developed their own unique character and sense of history in relation to their agricultural roots.

One fun fact about this region is that Greene County is home to the Old Settlers Days, an annual event held in the city of Carrollton. The festival celebrates the early settlers of the region and showcases historical reenactments, demonstrations of traditional skills, and other events commemorating the county's pioneering history. This event reflects the community's pride in its past and commitment to preserving its unique heritage.
