Grundy County is located in the northeastern part of the state of Illinois and was founded on February 17, 1841. The county was named after Felix Grundy, a prominent attorney, judge, and United States Senator from Tennessee who served as the nation's Attorney General in the 1830s. The county's total area is 430 square miles, with its administrative center situated in the city of Morris.

In its early years, Grundy County was inhabited by Native American tribes such as the Potawatomi, followed by European settlers who arrived primarily from the eastern United States and Europe. The Illinois River played a significant role in the day-to-day activities of the settlement, influencing both economic and residential development. As the county grew, agriculture and coal mining became the main industries, attracting workers and fostering a prosperous local economy.

A significant transportation development came in the 1840s with the construction of the Illinois and Michigan Canal, connecting the Great Lakes to the Mississippi River. The canal's presence contributed to increased commercial activity for the county through trade and transportation of goods. Another critical transportation milestone was the arrival of the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad in the 1850s, further expanding Grundy County's connections to larger cities and markets.

Today, Grundy County retains its small-town charm and historical character, maintaining a balance between urban and rural landscapes. Many historical buildings, including the Grundy County Courthouse and the Morris Downtown Historic District, can still be visited today by those interested in the local history.

One fun fact about Grundy County is that it hosts the annual Grundy County Corn Festival, a week-long celebration of the area's agricultural history, featuring parades, live entertainment, and carnival events. The festival has been held annually since 1949 and is a testament to the importance of agriculture in the county's history and its ongoing community connections.
