Hamilton County is located in the southern region of Illinois and was founded in 1821. The county seat is McLeansboro, named after its founder, General Samuel McLean.

In the early history of Hamilton County, the majority of settlers were from the southern states, searching for new opportunities in agriculture and trade. The region's fertile soil and favorable climate made it a prime location for farming. Throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, the county's economy was primarily based on agriculture, coal mining, and timber production. Small-scale manufacturing and oil production also played a role in shaping the local economy.

One fun fact about Hamilton County is that it is home to the smallest public library system in the state of Illinois. The David and Debbie Berry Library, located in Dahlgren, is a great resource for local residents and hosts various events to help foster a love of reading within the community.

Today, Hamilton County continues to rely on agriculture as a vital part of its economy, but tourism also plays a growing role, with numerous parks, lakes, and historic sites attracting visitors from near and far.
