Jasper County is a county located in the southeastern part of Illinois, United States. The county was established on December 19, 1831, and was named in honor of Sergeant William Jasper, a Revolutionary War soldier known for his heroic actions during the Siege of Savannah. The county seat and largest city in Jasper County is Newton.

The region was originally inhabited by Native American tribes, such as the Illinois, Miami, and Kickapoo, before European explorers and settlers arrived in the 17th and 18th centuries. The first European settlements in the area date back to the 1800s, and the region saw significant growth in agriculture, industry, and infrastructure in the following years.

Jasper County has seen some notable moments in history, including the Great Snowstorm of 1830-1831, which had a crucial impact on the local agricultural economy. During the 19th and early 20th centuries, the county experienced a flourishing industry, especially in coal mining and manufacturing.

One fun fact about Jasper County is that it was home to the Embarras River Monster, also known as "Emmie," a legendary creature reported to live in the Embarras River that runs through the county. The folkloric creature was said to be a serpent-like animal with a huge body, several feet in length, and the stories surrounding its existence gained popularity in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Thus, Jasper County is not only known for its rich history but also has its place in local folklore and legends.
