Jefferson County, located in the great state of Illinois, has a rich historical background. Established on March 26, 1819, it is named in honor of Thomas Jefferson, one of the Founding Fathers of the United States and the principal author of the Declaration of Independence.

The area that currently forms Jefferson County was originally inhabited by Native Americans, predominantly the Illinois and Piankashaw tribes. As European settlers arrived and started to occupy the land, conflicts arose between them and the Indigenous people, which eventually resulted in the displacement of the Native Americans.

The growth of Jefferson County accelerated in the 19th century with the development of agriculture and the arrival of the railroad. The county seat, Mount Vernon, was founded in 1819 by Zadok Casey and was named after George Washington's Virginia plantation. Mount Vernon rapidly became a thriving trade center due to its strategic location near the midpoint of the Goshen Road, an overland route connecting the forts of Kaskaskia and Vincennes.

One fun fact about Jefferson County is that during the 1920s, the region was known for its thriving apple and peach orchards. In fact, it once held the title of the "Fruit Belt of the Midwest." Today, Jefferson County continues to serve as an important agricultural hub, with diversified crops and industries contributing to its economic growth.
