Jersey County is located in the southwestern region of the great state of Illinois. It was established on February 28, 1839, and was named in honor of the state of New Jersey, from where many of its early settlers originated. The county seat, Jerseyville, was settled in 1827 and named in 1834.

Jersey County has a rich history dating back to the early 19th century, and its development was largely due to its position along the Mississippi River, which provided transport routes to other parts of the country. The county experienced significant growth between the 1830s and the 1850s, with an increase in farming, milling, and quarrying industries, as well as a major boom in population due to European immigration.

During the Civil War, Jersey County contributed to the Union war effort, providing soldiers and supplies for the military. After the war, new transportation links, a growth in industry, and the expansion of education further strengthened the local economy.

Today, Jersey County maintains its status as an important agricultural center, with corn, soybeans, and wheat being the primary crops. The region also has a thriving tourism industry, largely due to the presence of the picturesque Pere Marquette State Park, which offers a range of recreational activities including hiking, bird watching, camping, and horseback riding.

Fun Fact: Jersey County is home to the Copperhead snake sculpture - a 350-foot long serpent sculpture made of rocks and sand that's a popular attraction tucked away in the woods. This unique piece of folk art was constructed by local artist Wayne Hagen in the early 1980s and has become a favorite among visitors and residents alike.
