Johnson County is located in the southern region of the great state of Illinois. Established on September 13, 1812, it was named in honor of Richard Mentor Johnson, who was a U.S. Representative and later the ninth Vice President of the United States. The county was formed out of Randolph County, which incidentally was part of the Illinois territory created in 1809.

Throughout its history, Johnson County remained predominantly rural, with agriculture and natural resource extraction being its primary economic activities. The population of the county steadily increased over the years. During the 1800s, several towns and villages emerged, including Vienna, the county seat, established in 1818, and other communities such as Goreville, Simpson, and Buncombe.

Johnson County is home to several recreational and natural attractions. The Shawnee National Forest, which stretches out over 289,000 acres, offers numerous trails, camping sites, and outdoor adventures. The Tunnel Hill State Trail, a popular bike route, also runs through the county. Other significant points of interest include the historic Heron Pond and the popular Ferne Clyffe State Park.

Fun Fact: Johnson County is home to the first officially recognized softball league, which was established in the town of Vienna in 1975.
