Kankakee County is located in the northeastern part of the great state of Illinois, approximately 60 miles south of Chicago. The county was created on February 11, 1853, and encompasses a land area of over 680 square miles. Its county seat is situated in the city of Kankakee.

The region that would become Kankakee County was originally inhabited by various Native American tribes, including the Potawatomi, who lived in the area for several hundred years before European settlers arrived. The first European explorers to visit Kankakee County were French, led by Robert Cavalier Sieur de La Salle in the 1670s. In the early 19th century, the United States government started encouraging settlers to move into the area through various land acts that promoted agricultural development.

In the mid-19th century, the Illinois Central Railroad was built through the county, stimulating further growth in commerce, agriculture, and the local population. Over the years, Kankakee County has established itself as a hub for agriculture, with crops such as corn, soybeans, and wheat being the most prominent.

As for a fun fact about Kankakee County, it is known as the "City of Roses" due to the abundance of rose gardens that were historically found here. In the 1930s, the city of Kankakee even held an annual Rose Festival, which attracted visitors from all over the world to celebrate the beauty of the blooming flowers.
