LaSalle County, located in the north-central region of the great state of Illinois, was established on January 15, 1831. The county was named in honor of Ren-Robert Cavelier, Sieur de La Salle, a French explorer who frequented the region and traversed the Illinois River in the 17th century. The county seat, Ottawa, was chosen in 1831 and incorporated as a city in 1853.

LaSalle County played a significant role in the growth and development of Illinois, particularly during the mid-19th century. The Illinois and Michigan Canal, which connected the Illinois River to Lake Michigan, opened in 1848 and operated until 1933. This canal was vital for transportation and commerce, leading to rapid population growth and the expansion of industry and agriculture in the region.

The county saw further development in the mid-1800s with the arrival of the Illinois Central Railroad and numerous other railroads that crisscrossed the region. These transportation networks helped establish LaSalle County as a leading producer of coal, with several mines operating throughout the area. Additionally, LaSalle County became known for its glass manufacturing, producing bottles, jars, and other glass products.

A fun fact about LaSalle County involves the captivating Starved Rock State Park, which is situated in the region. The park is home to numerous sandstone canyons and waterfalls and played a significant role in the area's history. It derives its name from a Native American legend that tells of a group of Illiniwek who starved to death on the rock during a battle against the Ottawa and Potawatomi tribes. Today, the park is a popular destination for hikers, campers, and nature enthusiasts seeking to explore its natural beauty and rich history.
