Lake County is located in the northeastern region of the great state of Illinois, alongside the shoreline of Lake Michigan. Established on March 1, 1839, the county was initially carved out of McHenry County and named after its primary geographic feature, Lake Michigan. Lake County is part of the greater Chicago metropolitan area, and its county seat is Waukegan.

Native American tribes, such as the Potawatomi, inhabited the area before European settlement. The first settlers of European descent arrived in the early 19th century, with the majority of them hailing from New York, New England, and Germany.

The construction of railroads promoted the growth and development of the county. Notably, the Chicago and Milwaukee Railroad (later known as the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad) began operation in the region in the early 1850s, connecting Lake County to Chicago and Milwaukee.

The county has a rich history that includes the development of several significant institutions, like the Great Lakes Naval Training Center, which was founded in 1911 and has since become the largest naval training facility in the U.S. Lake County's economy historically depended on agriculture, with early agricultural activities focusing on dairy, fruit, and vegetable production.

In the 20th century, industries began moving into the county, shifting from an agriculturally-based economy to a more diverse and industrialized one. Major employers today include the healthcare, manufacturing, and retail sectors.

A fun fact about Lake County is that it is home to Six Flags Great America, one of the top amusement parks in the country. The park, which opened in 1976, features roller coasters, family attractions, and entertainment, attracting millions of visitors every year.
