Livingston County, located in the great state of Illinois, was established on February 27, 1837, and it was named in honor of Edward Livingston, a prominent American jurist, and statesman. The county covers an area of 1,044 square miles and is located in northern Illinois. Its county seat is Pontiac.

The region was originally inhabited by Native American tribes, particularly the Kickapoo, prior to the arrival of European settlers. During the early 19th century, European settlers, mainly from southern states and New England, began to move into the area in search of fertile farmland.

Throughout the 19th century, agriculture remained the main economic driver for Livingston County. The development of railroads in the mid-1800s, such as the Chicago and Paducah Railroad, contributed significantly to the growth of Pontiac and other towns in the county by connecting them to larger cities like Chicago. This, in turn, attracted more settlers and businesses to the region.

In 1871, the county experienced an influx of coal miners, which led to the establishment of several coal mines, contributing to the local economy. However, most of these mines were closed by the early 20th century, returning the focus of Livingston County to primarily agriculture and manufacturing.

One fun fact about Livingston County is that the historic Route 66, also known as the "Main Street of America," passes through the county and the city of Pontiac. The city is now home to the Illinois Route 66 Hall of Fame and Museum, which celebrates the iconic highway's history and significance.
