Macoupin County, located in the great state of Illinois, was established on January 17, 1829, and named after Macoupin Creek, a tributary of the Illinois River. The name "Macoupin" is derived from a Miami-Illinois term meaning "White Potato," referring to American lotus tubers, which grew abundantly along the banks of the creek.

The county seat, Carlinville, was established in 1835 and named after Thomas Carlin, sixth governor of Illinois from 1838 to 1842. Macoupin County initially relied heavily on agriculture, with many of its early settlers being farmers. The region's fertile soil provided excellent conditions for growing crops such as corn, wheat, and potatoes.

During the 19th century, Macoupin County witnessed significant growth due to the construction of railroads that connected the county with other major parts of the state, offering new economic opportunities. The discovery of coal deposits in the area also played a vital role in the county's development, leading to the establishment of several mining towns and attracting immigrants from Europe, especially Irish, German, and Italian miners.

Macoupin County is also well-known for its historic architecture, including notable landmarks like the Macoupin County Courthouse. Constructed between 1867 and 1870, it was designed by architect Elijah E. Myers and is the largest county courthouse in the United States. This impressive, three-story building features a Classical Revival architectural style and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Fun Fact: The town of Carlinville, within Macoupin County, is home to the largest collection of Sears Catalog Homes in the country, with over 150 homes standing as a testament to early 20th-century mail-order housing. These homes were purchased through the popular Sears, Roebuck and Company catalog and shipped as kits for homeowners to assemble themselves. This unique collection has earned Carlinville the nickname, "The Sears Home Capital of the World."
