Marshall County is located in the north-central part of Illinois and has a rich history dating back to its establishment on January 13, 1839. The county was named in honor of John Marshall, the fourth Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court, who served from 1801 to 1835. Covering an area of 399 square miles, Marshall County is home to the Illinois River, which has played a significant role in the county's development and history.

In its early days, the first settlers of Marshall County were primarily of English and Scottish descent, attracted by the fertile lands and abundant natural resources. Agriculture quickly became a major industry in the region, with crops such as corn, wheat, and soybeans being cultivated for both local consumption and export.

Lacon, the county seat, was established in 1831 by George and William Hawes, who named it after their hometown of Lacon, New Hampshire. As the county developed, it became an important hub for transportation, especially after the completion of the Illinois Central Railroad in 1854, which connected the region with the rest of the state.

In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Marshall County saw significant growth in industry, with the establishment of glass factories, milling operations, and the expansion of coal mining in the region. The county's population peaked in the 1920s before witnessing a slow decline through the latter portion of the 20th century and into the 21st century.

A fun fact about Marshall County is that it is home to the Wild Turkey Federation's 5,000-acre Big Sandy Ridge Preserve, which is dedicated to the restoration and preservation of the region's native wild turkey populations. This turkey restoration project has been successful in reintroducing the native wild turkey to the area, making it a popular destination for wildlife enthusiasts and hunters alike.
