Massac County is a small county located in the southernmost part of Illinois with its county seat in Metropolis. It was established on February 8, 1843, and was named after Fort Massac, a French fortification built in the area in 1757 during the French and Indian War. The area has a rich history dating back to its Native American settlements and European explorations.

The Fort Massac site, now known as Fort Massac State Park, played a crucial role in both the French and Indian War and the American Revolutionary War due to its strategic location along the Ohio River. It was used as a military base that allowed control over the river's transportation routes. George Rogers Clark, an American Revolutionary War hero, captured the fort from the British in 1778.

During the early 1800s, the county's economy mainly relied on agriculture, with corn, wheat, and tobacco as primary crops. The Ohio River, as well as road and rail infrastructure, facilitated trade and transportation throughout the region.

A fun fact about Massac County is that it is home to the city of Metropolis, which officially gained the title of "Hometown of Superman" in 1972. Metropolis hosts an annual Superman celebration, featuring parades, costume contests, and celebrity appearances, attracting comic book fans and tourists from across the country. A giant Superman statue stands in the town square, symbolizing the connection between the fictional hero and the small town in southern Illinois.
