McDonough County is located in the western-central region of Illinois and was founded on January 25, 1826. The county is named in honor of Thomas Macdonough, an early 19th-century naval officer who played a crucial role in the War of 1812 by defeating the British fleet in the Battle of Lake Champlain. McDonough County consists of several cities, towns, and villages with Macomb, the largest city, serving as the county seat.

The area has a rich history of settlement and agriculture, with earliest inhabitants belonging to the ancient Native American cultures. It was not until the 1800s that European settlers began to inhabit the region, predominantly English, Scotch-Irish, and German immigrants. These settlers developed thriving farming communities, capitalizing on the fertile soil and ample prairie land.

One noteworthy historical event occurred in McDonough County when President Abraham Lincoln and Stephen A. Douglas held one of their famous Lincoln-Douglas debates in the town of Augusta on August 21, 1858. Today, the county maintains an agricultural focus, with a strong educational presence due to the establishment of Western Illinois University in Macomb in 1899.
