McHenry County is located in the northeastern part of the state of Illinois, approximately 50 miles northwest of Chicago. Established on January 16, 1836, the county was named in honor of Major William McHenry, a prominent figure in the Black Hawk War of 1832. Spanning across 611 square miles, McHenry County is bordered by the state of Wisconsin to the north and the Fox River to the east.

The region was initially settled by immigrants primarily from the New England region due to its fertile prairies and ample woodlands. The first settlements appeared in the 1830s, with towns such as Marengo, Richmond, and Woodstock emerging by the 1850s.

The construction of the Galena & Chicago Union Railroad in the early 1850s facilitated transportation and contributed to the county's growth. During the 19th century, agricultural activity, particularly dairy farming, thrived in McHenry County. It is also home to several major state parks and natural conservation areas, further enhancing its appeal.

In the 20th century, McHenry County experienced suburbanization as the greater Chicago metropolitan area expanded. As a result, the population grew substantially, with over 300,000 residents by the 2010 census.

Fun fact: McHenry County is home to the annual Illinois Railway Museum, which is the largest railway museum in the United States. Visitors from all over the world come to see historic railroad equipment and artifacts, as well as ride on fully operational trains throughout the museum's vast property.
