Mercer County is located in the northwestern region of the great state of Illinois. It was established on January 13, 1825, as the capital of the Illinois Military Tract, a region set aside to provide land to war veterans. The county was named in honor of Hugh Mercer, a Revolutionary War General who fought and died at the Battle of Princeton.

Initially, Native American tribes, including the Sauk and Meskwaki, inhabited the area before European settlers arrived. The first European settlers came in the early 19th century, most notably George Davenport and Russell Farnham, who established a trading post in 1827 that would later become the town of New Boston.

Agriculture has been a significant economic driver in the history of Mercer County. The fertile soil, river access, and the arrival of the railroad in the 1850s contributed to its agricultural development. The county's economy also diversified with the growth of industries like coal mining, pottery, and brick manufacturing.

Fun Fact: Mercer County is home to the "Rhubarb Capital of Illinois." The town of Aledo holds an annual Rhubarb Festival on the first Friday and Saturday of June, which attracts thousands of people. The festival showcases pies, jams, and other rhubarb-based treats, as well as offering antique shopping, craft vendors, and live entertainment. This fun event is a nod to the agricultural significance and heritage of Mercer County.
