Montgomery County is located in the great state of Illinois, specifically in the central part of the state. Established on December 20, 1821, the county was formed out of Bond and Madison counties and named after General Richard Montgomery, an American Revolutionary War hero killed at the Battle of Quebec.

The area was initially settled by European-American migrants, primarily from the states in the South, most notably from Kentucky, Tennessee, and the Carolinas. Montgomery County has a rich agricultural history and became an important trading center as it was connected to the Wabash & Erie Canal, which provided economic growth and development in the region.

Montgomery County also played a role in the settling of the Wild West. In the early stages of westward expansion, settlers from Illinois traveled to new territories in the West, thus forging an important link between the East and West.

The city of Litchfield, found in Montgomery County, holds an interesting and fun fact. In 1926, an iconic Route 66, also known as the "Mother Road," was established, which passed through Litchfield, bringing prosperity to the city. As a result, Litchfield is now famous for some of its classic Route 66 icons, such as the Ariston Caf, considered one of the oldest continuously-operating cafes along the route, and the historic Sky View Drive-In, which is the last originally operating drive-in theater on Route 66 in Illinois.
