Morgan County, located in the great state of Illinois, was first established on January 13, 1823. It was created out of Sangamon and Greene counties and was named in honor of Daniel Morgan, an American Revolutionary War hero, and a general in the United States Army during the War of 1812. The county seat, Jacksonville, was settled in 1820 by European Americans, but the region was previously inhabited by the native Kickapoo and Mascouten tribes.

In the mid-19th century, Morgan County became an important stopping point for settlers and travelers moving westward. The development of the railroad in Jacksonville contributed to the county's early economic growth, especially in agriculture.

Morgan County also played a significant role in the establishment of Illinois College, which was founded in 1829 by Yale missionaries. Illinois College's Beecher Hall, which was completed in 1830, has the distinction of being the oldest college building in the state.

One fun fact about Morgan County is that it was part of the famous 1803 Lewis and Clark Expedition. The explorers traveled through the county on their way to the Pacific Ocean, and their journey helped to bring attention to the region, encouraging further settlement and development.
