Moultrie County is located in the great state of Illinois, and it was officially established on February 16, 1843. The county was named in honor of Major General William Moultrie, a South Carolina Revolutionary War hero who successfully defended Charleston, South Carolina, against a British attack in 1776. Moultrie County is situated in the central part of Illinois and encompasses an area of about 344 square miles.

The county seat, Sullivan, was chosen for its central location within the county boundaries. The Illinois Central Railroad and Illinois Central Gulf Railroad played a significant role in the growth of Moultrie County by establishing connections with other towns and cities, which facilitated the transportation of goods and passengers throughout the region.

The county's economy has historically been based mainly on agriculture, with corn, soybeans, wheat, and livestock as primary products. However, there has been a shift toward manufacturing and service-based industries in recent years.
