Perry County, located in the great state of Illinois, was established on January 29, 1827. It was named in honor of Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry, a distinguished American naval officer who famously played a significant role in the War of 1812. The county seat is Pinckneyville.

Initially, Perry County was primarily inhabited by Native American tribes, including the Kaskaskia and Shawnee. European-American settlers began to arrive in the early 19th century. Agriculture played a crucial role in the county's development, with a mix of small family farms and larger plantations dominating the landscape.

Perry County experienced a significant increase in population during the mid-1800s, with many immigrants, particularly from Germany and other parts of Europe, establishing their homes in the region. The arrival of the railroad in the 1850s further contributed to the county's prosperity.

Although the majority of the industry in Perry County has historically been based on agriculture, coal mining also played an important role in the region's economy during the 20th century. Today, the county has diversified its economy with manufacturing, healthcare, and other industries in addition to agriculture.

A fun fact about Perry County is that it hosts the annual Pinckneyville Mardi Gras, which began in 1921. Over the years, the festival has grown to become the oldest continuous Mardi Gras celebration held outside of the city of New Orleans. The event features a large parade, live music, food vendors, and various other festivities, drawing crowds from all around Illinois and the United States.
