Pike County, located in the western part of Illinois, was established on January 31, 1821. It was named in honor of Zebulon Pike, an American General who led the Pike expedition in 1805 to explore the southwestern portion of the Louisiana Purchase. Pike County originally encompassed a much larger area, including some regions that now belong to other Illinois counties such as Adams, Brown, Calhoun, and Schuyler.

Pike County played a significant role in the abolitionist movement during the pre-Civil War era, as it became a well-known route for the Underground Railroad. Several of its residents were dedicated anti-slavery activists, helping slaves escape to the free state of Illinois or continued on to Canada.

One fun fact about this region is the presence of the Pike County Fall Color Drive, an annual event held in October. This event allows visitors to enjoy the beautiful autumn foliage while exploring various small communities through scenic drives and visiting historic sites, art displays, and local vendors within the county.
