Pope County, located in the southeastern part of the great state of Illinois, was established on January 10, 1816. It was named in honor of Nathaniel Pope, a prominent politician, jurist, and officer during the War of 1812 who later became a U.S. Representative and Federal Judge for the state of Illinois.

The county covers an area of about 374 square miles and is bound by the Ohio River on the south and east. It is known for its serene beauty, and the Shawnee National Forest occupies a significant portion of the region, offering outdoor recreational opportunities aplenty.

Agriculture has always been crucial to Pope County's economy from the very beginning, but it also became an important center of transportation, with the steamboat era transporting goods and people along the Ohio River.

Fun fact: Pope County is home to a natural curiosity called the "Burden Falls," which is among the highest waterfalls in Illinois. This hidden gem within the Shawnee National Forest is a popular hiking and sightseeing destination for locals and tourists alike.
