Putnam County, located in the great state of Illinois, was established on January 13, 1825. Named in honor of General Israel Putnam, a hero of the American Revolutionary War, the county is the smallest in Illinois both in terms of population and land area. It is situated in the north-central region of the state, covering around 172 square miles.

Initially, its county seat was established at Hennepin in the middle of the 19th century, and the first settlers mainly engaged in agriculture, developing the fertile lands surrounding the Illinois River. The construction of the Illinois and Michigan Canal, which began in 1836, played a significant role in the growth and development of the county, as it facilitated trade and transportation.

In the 1840s, Putnam County experienced an economic boom due to the discovery of coal. The mining industry thrived throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries, further diversifying the local economy.

A fun fact about Putnam County is that it is home to several state parks, including the Starved Rock State Park. This park, which is situated along the south bank of the Illinois River, is famous for its fascinating rock formations, canyons, and waterfalls, drawing visitors from all over the country to enjoy the area's rich natural beauty.
