Rock Island County, located in the great state of Illinois, was established on January 15, 1831, and named after the Rock Island, a natural landmark in the Mississippi River. The county is situated in the northwestern part of the state and covers an area of about 451 square miles. The Mississippi River borders it on the west and the Rock River on the south, both important waterways for trade and transportation.

In the early 19th century, the region was inhabited by Sauk and Meskwaki tribes. The 1804 Treaty of St. Louis between the United States and Sac & Fox tribes led to tensions in the area due to disputed land claims. This conflict eventually culminated in the Black Hawk War of 1832, led by the Sauk warrior Black Hawk who aimed to reclaim tribal lands.

During the 19th and 20th centuries, Rock Island County experienced significant industrial growth, driven by its advantageous geographical location and accessibility to major railways. In the late 19th century, the county became a hub for liquor manufacturing, particularly during the Prohibition era, when illegal speakeasies thrived.

Today, Rock Island County is well-known as part of the Quad Cities, a region consisting of five major cities along the Mississippi River, including Moline and Rock Island in Illinois, and Davenport, Bettendorf, and East Moline in Iowa. The area boasts a vibrant cultural scene, with numerous museums, arts venues, and parks for residents and visitors to enjoy.

Fun Fact: The Rock Island Arsenal, located on the island that the county is named after, is the largest government-owned weapons manufacturing facility in the United States. Established in 1862, it has played a significant role in the manufacturing and development of military weapons and equipment throughout history, including during the Civil War, World War I and II, and various other conflicts.
