Shelby County, located in the great state of Illinois, was established on January 23, 1827. Occupying about 760 square miles of land, it was named in honor of Isaac Shelby, who was a Revolutionary War hero and the first governor of Kentucky. Throughout its history in the 19th and 20th centuries, Shelby County's economy primarily revolved around agriculture, with corn and soybeans being the primary crops.

The county seat of Shelbyville was founded in 1827 by John Burgett, a War of 1812 veteran, and was officially recognized as a village in 1839. Shelbyville was named after the county itself, and its earliest settlers were attracted to the fertile soil and rich resources the region had to offer.

Shelby County is home to several communities, including Sigel, Cowden, Windsor, Stewardson, Findlay, and several others. Each community brings its own unique characteristics to the overall charm of this rural county.

A fun fact about Shelby County is that it is home to Illinois' largest man-made body of water, known as Lake Shelbyville. This lake covers nearly 11,000 acres of water and provides the surrounding communities with ample opportunities for recreation, including boating, fishing, and swimming. Lake Shelbyville was formed in 1970 following the construction of the Shelbyville Dam by the United States Army Corps of Engineers as a flood control and water supply project. The lake and its surrounding area also serve as a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts, with numerous parks and trails available for public use.
