Stephenson County is located in the northern region of the great state of Illinois. Established on March 4, 1837, the county was named in honor of Colonel Benjamin Stephenson, an influential figure in the state of Illinois who served as a colonel during the War of 1812 and as a delegate to the Illinois Constitutional Convention in 1818. The county seat is Freeport, which is also the largest city in the region.

In the early 19th century, the area around Stephenson County was mainly inhabited by Native American tribes, such as the Winnebago and Potawatomi. The region witnessed a significant influx of settlers from the eastern states during the 1830s, which led to the establishment of the county.

In its early history, Stephenson County's economy relied primarily on agriculture, with wheat being the main crop, followed by corn and livestock production. The arrival of the Illinois Central Railroad in 1854 connected the region to broader markets, accelerating its growth and development. The county's industrial prowess also rapidly expanded, with manufacturing and dairy industries becoming essential components of the local economy.

Freeport, the county seat, played a significant role in American history, as it was the site of the second Lincoln-Douglas debate in August 1858, where the future President Abraham Lincoln debated the incumbent Senator Stephen A. Douglas on the issue of slavery. The debate took place at what is now known as Debate Square.
