Union County is located in the southern part of the great state of Illinois and was founded on January 2, 1818, making it one of the oldest counties in the state. Its county seat is Jonesboro, which also played a significant role in Illinois history as one of the sites of the 1858 Lincoln-Douglas debates.

The county is part of the Illinois Ozarks and Shawnee National Forest, which boasts beautiful scenery and rich ecological diversity. In its early years, Union County's economy was largely driven by agriculture, primarily focusing on corn, wheat, and livestock.

The region was initially inhabited by various Native American tribes, including the Shawnee and Chickasaw. European settlers, mainly of English, Irish, and German descent, began to arrive in the late 1700s and early 1800s. With a history marked by the American Civil War, the county experienced significant social and economic impacts during and after the conflict.

Fun Fact: Union County is home to the Shawnee Hills Wine Trail, a collection of 11 family-owned wineries situated in the scenic Shawnee National Forest. The wine trail offers wine enthusiasts a delightful experience through the picturesque landscapes of Southern Illinois, and it has grown in popularity over the years, attracting many visitors from around the USA.
