White County is located in the southeastern part of the state of Illinois, and was established in 1815, just seven years after Illinois joined the Union as the 21st state. Named after Leonard White, an Illinois Territory territorial representative at the time of the county's formation, White County was created from portions of Gallatin and Edwards counties.

Originally a flourishing agricultural area, White County's rich soil made it ideal for crops such as corn and wheat. In the late 19th century, the county experienced an oil boom, and the town of Carmi emerged as an industrial center. The population of the county grew significantly during this period, driven by the employment opportunities provided by the oil industry. Today, agriculture continues to play a vital role in White County's economy, along with manufacturing, healthcare, and retail trade.

One fun fact about White County is the existence of several ancient Native American mound sites. These sites provide evidence of the region's rich prehistoric cultural heritage. Among these, the Maunie Mounds, located near the town of Maunie, are believed to have been constructed around 900 AD by the Mississippian Culture. The mounds are a testament to the fascinating history of the region and stand as a link to the past for residents and visitors alike.
