Whiteside County is located in the northwestern region of the great state of Illinois. It was established on January 16, 1836, and was named after General Samuel Whiteside, a hero of the Black Hawk War that took place in 1832. The county covers an area of around 697 square miles and has a population of roughly 58,000 (as of 2020). The county seat is located in Morrison, while the largest city in the county is Sterling.

Prior to European settlement, the area was inhabited by Native American tribes, like the Sauk and Fox. In the early 1800s, the construction of the Erie Canal played a crucial role in attracting early settlers to Whiteside County, as it connected the Great Lakes with the Mississippi River. The area was primarily used for agriculture, and by the mid-1800s, it became a major producer of corn and wheat. The proximity to the Rock River provided easy access to water sources, aiding in the development of the county's agricultural and industrial sectors.

As the county continued to evolve, the arrival of the railroad in the 1850s further boosted economic growth, leading to a proliferation of industries such as manufacturing, agriculture, and lumber production. The Hennepin Canal, completed in 1907, linked Whiteside County to the Illinois River and the Mississippi River.

A fun fact about Whiteside County is that Ronald Reagan, the 40th President of the United States, was born in the small town of Tampico within the county on February 6, 1911. The Ronald Reagan Birthplace & Museum has been established in Tampico to commemorate his birth and early life.
