Decatur County, located in the great state of Indiana, was officially formed and named after the US naval hero Stephen Decatur on January 9, 1822. It is situated in the southeastern part of the state and comprises an area of about 372 square miles.

Initial settlement of the county began in the early 1820s as European settlers, primarily of German and Irish descent, arrived in the area. The county seat, Greensburg, was founded in 1821 and named after the city's founder, Thomas Hendricks. Decatur County experienced steady development and growth throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries, with its economy mainly focusing on agriculture.

Today, Decatur County is known for its rural beauty, friendly communities, and strong agricultural industry. It has a population of approximately 26,000 residents.

Fun Fact: Greensburg, the county seat of Decatur County, is famously known as the "Tree City" due to a peculiar natural phenomenon - a tree (now multiple trees) growing out of the courthouse clocktower. The first tree was spotted growing from the tower in the 1870s, and ever since then, trees have continued to grow from the tower's roof. This unique sight attracts visitors and has become a symbol of the city.
