Delaware County, located in the east-central region of Indiana, was established on January 26, 1827. The county's total area is approximately 395 square miles, and it is named after the Delaware Indians, a Native American tribe that originally inhabited the region.

Before the arrival of European settlers in the early 19th century, Delaware County was home to various Native American tribes, including the Delaware (also known as Lenape) and the Miami. In 1818, the Treaty of St. Mary's was signed with local tribes, allowing the United States to purchase land that would eventually become Delaware County.

Muncie, the county seat, was officially incorporated as a city in 1865. Throughout the 19th century, the area experienced steady growth, with the first railroad coming to the county in 1852, which accelerated economic development. The discovery of natural gas in the late 19th century also contributed significantly to industrial growth in Delaware County, attracting businesses and manufacturing companies, particularly glass factories.

During the 20th century, Delaware County contributed to the World War II effort with local companies like Ball Corporation, which manufactured items for the military. In the post-war period, the county experienced significant growth as manufacturing remained an economic backbone.

A fun fact about this region is that one of the famous industries in Delaware County is the Ball Corporation, founded by the Ball Brothers, known for their glass jars and containers. The Ball Company later expanded its operations into aerospace and other technologies, and their historic legacy can still be seen at "Minnetrista," a cultural complex in Muncie showcasing the history, art, and science of the local area.
