Dubois County is located in the great state of Indiana, situated in the southwestern part of the state. Established on December 20, 1817, the county was named in honor of Toussaint Dubois, a French-American who fought in the Revolutionary War, the War of 1812, and served as a translator for Indiana's territorial government. It was originally territory occupied by the Eastern Woodlands Indian tribes, and was later settled by Europeans in the late 18th and early 19th centuries.

The county is rich in history, with a significant German heritage. The city of Jasper, which is the county seat, was founded in 1830 by German immigrants. Jasper quickly became a major hub for timber and woodworking industries, taking advantage of the area's abundant natural resources. Today, Jasper is known as the "Wood Capital of the World."

Dubois County played a vital role in World War II, as it was home to the Naval Ammunition Depot, which produced a significant portion of the US Navy's ammunition during the war. After the war, the depot was repurposed into an industrial park and airport.

One interesting fact about Dubois County is that it is home to the only known uncontrolled Jesuit cemetery in the world. Found on a family farm southwest of Jasper, the cemetery was established in the late 1800s by members of the Jesuit order, giving it a unique place in both local and religious history.

Another fun fact: Dubois County is part of the region known as the Indiana Uplands, a hilly and forested area that offers residents and visitors a variety of outdoor recreation opportunities, including several parks and lakes. The county is a great destination for those interested in exploring the natural beauty of Indiana.
