Elkhart County, located in the great state of Indiana, was officially established on April 1, 1830. Situated in the northern part of the state, it encompasses approximately 467 square miles of land. The county is the gateway to Amish country and is part of the region often referred to as Michiana, due to its proximity to Michigan. Elkhart is home to the cities of Goshen and Elkhart and is an important center of manufacturing and business within the state.

Initially, the Miami and Potawatomi tribes inhabited the region before European-American settlers arrived in the early 1800s. In 1828, Dr. Havilah Beardsley, a physician from Ohio, founded the city of Elkhart, named after the Elkhart River, which was originally called "elk hart" by the Native Americans due to the river's shape resembling an elk's heart.

In the mid-to-late 19th century, Elkhart County saw significant growth with the arrival of the railway system, which facilitated the expansion of industry and trade. The county became a crucial hub for transportation and manufacturing, earning Elkhart the nickname, "The City with a Heart." This era of innovation in Elkhart County saw the birth of several pioneering companies, including the Conn Company, a prominent musical instrument manufacturer, and several recreational vehicle (RV) and boat manufacturers.

Today, Elkhart County remains a vital center of commerce and industry, with over 85% of the nation's RVs being manufactured in the region, earning it the title "RV Capital of the World." Additionally, the county is well-known for its Amish and Mennonite communities and their unique craftsmanship, culture, and culinary delights.

Fun fact: Elkhart County is home to the world's only museum dedicated to quilts and the art of quilting - the Quilt Gardens, which features stunning quilt patterned gardens with over one million annuals planted each year.
