Franklin County, located in the southeastern region of the great state of Indiana, was founded in 1811 and named after the influential American statesman Benjamin Franklin. It is situated within the Whitewater River Valley and is home to the county seat, Brookville.

Franklin County's history dates back to the arrival of European settlers, including predominantly German and Swiss immigrants, in the early 19th century. The county thrived due to agriculture and trade, taking advantage of its location along the Whitewater River. Brookville was a hub of economic activity in the 19th century, with mills, distilleries, and stores lining the riverbank.

One notable historical landmark in Franklin County is the Whitewater Canal, which was constructed in the 1830s and 1840s to facilitate transportation and trade across the region. Unfortunately, a series of floods throughout the 19th century severely damaged the canal, leading to its eventual abandonment.

A fun fact about Franklin County is that it is the location of Metamora, an unincorporated community that is often considered Indiana's "Canal Town." Today, Metamora attracts visitors for its historic setting, restored structures, and remnants of the Whitewater Canal, capturing the spirit of the 19th-century pioneer era. Visitors can also enjoy a ride on the Whitewater Valley Railroad, a heritage tourist railroad that runs through scenic southeastern Indiana countryside.
