Fulton County, located in the northern area of Indiana, was established on February 7, 1836. It was named in honor of Robert Fulton, an American engineer, and inventor, who is best known for developing the first commercially successful steamboat, the Clermont. The county seat is Rochester, which is also the largest city within Fulton County.

The historical background of Fulton County is deeply rooted in the lives of Miami and Potawatomi Native American tribes that inhabited the area before the arrival of European settlers in the early 1800s. The Treaty of Mississinwas in 1826 led to the removal of these tribes from the region, paving the way for the influx of European settlers.

Agriculture played a significant role in the development of Fulton County, with the introduction of railroads in the mid-19th century (the Michigan Road) facilitating transportation and trade. This greatly contributed to the growth and progress of the region.

A fun fact about this region is that it houses Round Barns, iconic structures unique to Fulton County. The county once had around 100 round barns, though today only eight remain. These circular structures, built around 1900-1925, were created to encourage the efficiency and economy of the farming industry; as the curved design was believed to be more weather-resistant and save on construction materials. Fulton County hosts the annual Round Barn Festival in Rochester to celebrate these historic structures and their significance to the county's heritage.
