Hancock County, located in the great state of Indiana, was officially established in 1828. It was named in honor of John Hancock, a prominent figure in the American Revolutionary War and the first person to sign the United States Declaration of Independence.

The county's initial European settlers were predominantly from the South and New England areas, which led to a diverse mix of cultural influences. Agriculture has always played a pivotal role in the region, with early settlers predominantly cultivating corn, wheat, and livestock.

In 1848, the town of Greenfield was named the county seat of Hancock County. During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the population experienced steady growth, and a variety of industries began to emerge, including glass manufacturing, milling, and blacksmithing.

One fun fact about the county is that it is the birthplace of the famous poet James Whitcomb Riley, who was born in Greenfield in 1849. Riley is best known for his vivid portrayals of rural life in Indiana and his use of Hoosier dialect, and he is fondly remembered as the "Hoosier Poet." Today, his childhood home has been preserved as the James Whitcomb Riley Boyhood Home & Museum, a popular tourist attraction in the area.
