Jasper County is located in the great state of Indiana and was officially established on February 15, 1838. The county was named in honor of Sergeant William Jasper, an American Revolutionary War hero known for his bravery and dedication. It is part of the Northwest Indiana region and covers an area of 561 square miles. The county seat and largest city is Rensselaer, which was founded by James Van Rensselaer, a settler from Utica, New York, in 1839.

Jasper County has a rich agricultural history, with fertile land ideal for farming. Throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries, it was primarily an agricultural community, with many residents engaged in growing crops like corn, wheat, and other grains. The county also embraced advances in transportation, including the arrival of the railroad in the mid-1800s, which contributed significantly to its growth and development.

Fun fact: Jasper County is home to the Jasper-Pulaski Fish and Wildlife Area, a protected habitat spanning over 8,000 acres that serves as a temporary home for up to 30,000 Sandhill Cranes during their fall migration. Every year, between October and December, visitors can witness this amazing spectacle as the cranes gather in the area before continuing their journey south.
