Madison County, Indiana
.Madison County, located in the great state of Indiana, was established on January 4, 1823. Named after the fourth President of the United States, James Madison, the county was once inhabited by indigenous peoples belonging to the Delaware (Lenape) tribe before European-American settlers made their way there.
The county seat, Anderson, was named after Chief William Anderson, a prominent Native American leader of the Delaware tribe. As the county continued to develop throughout the 19th century, agriculture played a major role in the region's economy. Madison County was also known for its natural gas boom that started in 1887, making it a part of the Indiana Gas Boom. Gas wells were drilled, and the abundance of natural gas offered residents cheaper fuel and attracted industries to the region.
One fun fact about Madison County is that it is home to one of the world's largest junior softball parks, the Anderson Wigwam. The Wigwam was built in 1962 and can hold more than 8,000 spectators, making it the second-largest high school gymnasium in the United States. It hosted many basketball games throughout the years until it was closed in 2011 due to high maintenance costs. However, the Wigwam was later reopened in 2018 and currently serves as an event center and sports complex.
