Morgan County, situated in the great state of Indiana, was established by the Indiana State Legislature on February 15, 1822. The county was named in honor of General Daniel Morgan, a hero of the American Revolutionary War. Martinsville, the county seat, was founded by an early pioneer named Isaac B. Dunn, who purchased the site in 1820 and named the town after his late wife's maiden name, Martin.

Morgan County lies in the central region of Indiana and covers approximately 409 square miles. The county is divided into 14 townships and consists of both rural and suburban areas. The townships experienced significant growth in the mid-19th century as the railroad system expanded, bringing new industries, settlers, and trade connections to the region.

Agriculture and manufacturing have been historically significant economic sectors in Morgan County. The area's fertile land has supported corn, soybean, and wheat farming, while manufacturers in the region have produced a wide range of goods, including glassworks, bricks, and furniture. The mineral water industry also flourished in Martinsville between the late 1800s and early 1900s, as the city promoted its natural mineral springs as a health destination, earning it the nickname of the "City of Mineral Water."

One fun fact about Morgan County is that the Stierwalt Tunnel, also known as the Hindostan Tunnel, is located in Morgan County. Constructed between 1870 and 1871, this brick-lined train tunnel measures an impressive 710 feet in length and 22 feet in width, making it a hidden treasure for history buffs and train enthusiasts alike.
