Newton County is a small but historically rich county located in the great state of Indiana. Officially organized on February 15, 1836, the county was named after U.S. soldier, Jasper Newton, who participated in the Creek War and the Battle of New Orleans. The county seat of Newton is the small town of Kentland. Covering an area of about 403 square miles, Newton County sits in the northwest part of Indiana.

In the 19th century, the county saw significant growth due to the expansion of the railroads, with the Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, Chicago and St. Louis Railroad passing through its towns. This allowed the agricultural sector to flourish, as farmers could now efficiently transport their goods, such as corn and wheat, to nearby markets.

Fun Fact: Newton County is home to Beaver Lake Prairie Chicken Refuge, a fascinating slice of nature established in 1961 to preserve and protect the natural habitat of the Greater Prairie Chickena once abundant but now threatened bird species in the state of Indiana. The area has since become a haven for wildlife and offers visitors a chance to experience the natural beauty of this unique ecosystem.
