Owen County is located in the heart of the great state of Indiana, USA. Established on December 21, 1818, it was one of the 15 counties created from land acquired through the Treaty of St. Mary's, signed with Native American tribes in 1818. Approximately 385 square miles in size, Owen County is named after Abraham Owen, a colonel from Kentucky who died in the Battle of Tippecanoe in 1811.

Once heavily forested, the land was cleared for agriculture and early settlers in the early 19th century focused primarily on crops like corn, wheat, and hay. Throughout the 19th and early 20th century, Owen County had a strong agricultural presence, and several small towns emerged as the population grew. Spencer, the largest town, became the county seat and remains it to this day.

Owen County experienced a shift in industry during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, as the rise of the limestone industry brought new prosperity to the region. Limestone from the region was used in the construction of many famous buildings like the Empire State Building in New York City and the Pentagon in Washington, D.C.

Fun fact: Owen County is home to McCormick's Creek State Park, Indiana's first state park, established in 1916. The park is known for its scenic trails, recreational opportunities, and awe-inspiring limestone canyons, making it a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts and nature lovers.
